I really can't see Apple getting more content at the same price as Netflix, or the same content at a lower price.
Granted Netflix can't sustain their pricing model forever, but Apple doesn't have many instances of making "better" and "cheaper" at the same time.
Netflix streaming content isn't that great. I subscribe, and I am happy for what is does, but it is more notable for what it does not. It wouldn't be that hard for Apple to duplicate the current Netflix streaming library, and offer that as a subscription as Netflix does. The big win for Apple is that they could ADDITIONALLY provide spontaneous limited-time downloads of new stuff on a pay-per-view basis.
Now, I know some of you would respond: "well, for $2 more per month I can get 1 DVD out at a time, which lets me watch XXX movies per month." Yes, that works for some people, but this requires a good deal of planning-- managing your queue, mailing and so forth. In my case, as I'm sure it is with many others, i have a family--wife, kids-- and I don't know exactly what my plan will be for the next few weeks. My personal Netflix DVD queue has a lot of Sci-Fi, but if I'm watching with my wife, we might go for a romantic comedy. Or we might just make a last minute decision to go out and skip the movie altogether. So a service that allows for more spontaneity than Netflix, at a few dollars more per month, would have massive appeal.

I like this law. We should bring it over here to the US
This would never get beyond the First Amendment, even with justices as conservative as Scalia. And rightly so. Clothing is a very basic way to express speech and exercise a religion.
And that's a predominantly muslim country so go figure. Is it wrong for them to ban it too or is it just wrong for france because they're not predominantly muslim?
Turkey passed it's law with a lot more due process and equal protection relative to France. The people who are most affected by this law have a lot less voting power than those whose racist and xenophobic ideology carried this travesty forward.
There is also a big difference between one nation trying to overcome it's history with misogyny and another trying to harshly impose a set of values on certain citizens.
The only part of the law that has any worth is the provision that overbearing men can be held accountable. Even that wreaks of paternalism, but at least it's a first attempt at addressing the root problem rather than just an opening salvo in a new culture war.

Interesting...I do indeed wonder if Apple does pursue the mobile phone market which provider they will be aligned with? Most likely Cingular given the track record they've had so far with their iTunes enabled phones.
Well hopefully people will get what they want...An iPhone could be pretty cool.

This app is a good thing IMO.
The majority of the time I really don't want to call customer service.
The app makes reporting a lot easier, let's just hope that they look at the data and try to fix the black spots...

I completely agree with Tomorrow on this, but I'll take it a step further. If someone is as stupid as this woman seems, they don't deserve to be in the gene pool. Christ, too bad the guy didn't shake the car and wipe this imbecile off the face of the earth. Yeah I know I'm a horrible person, and talking like an idiot, so on and so forth. Sorry I'm not be some bleeding heart who says, "Oh I feel so bad for this poor poor abused woman. Her husband deserves to burn, for this heinous act of abuse. He should have stopped for her, it was his responsibility, she was just trying to rescue their marriage by not lettig him run off, she just wanted to work things out." Cry me a river:rolleyes: It's the wife's own fault, for being an idiot and chasing after her husband (who was obviously trying to get away from his insane wife) and jumping on the roof of the car. I sure as hell wouldn't vote to find him guilty, unless it meant wiping his idiotic face off of the earth too.
The point is that people who demonstrate extreme stupidity (in this case both the wife and the husband, who's an idiot for not trying to shake her off) don't deserve to see another day in which they can create stupid children.

I'd rather Apple introduce a music streaming service.
Well since spotify is getting rid of its free service, now might be the chance to get in on that market...

It makes me want to cry everytime I go over there and have to use her old e-machines... :o :(

If you want to know what is on the 120Gb hdd read this (http://news.teamxbox.com/xbox/13122/Xbox-360-120-GB-HDD-Content-Revealed/).
That will instantly be lost as soon as you transfer your old HDD across.

To wrap up, those of you who have smart phones, whattya use AND what do you think to probability that Apple will release a phone w/ smart phone capabilities?
Thanks
Coachingguy
If Apple were at some point going to add a smartphone capabilities into its iPhones, then I doubt it'd be in the first version. If they do this, they're jumping into the mobile phone making market for the first time, so it'd be way too big a leap to jump in with a phone that's the swiss army knife of the digital age. The goal is going to be take away mainstream phone sales from companies that are launching phone & music playing devices. Smartphone users, while high in number, are still not mainstream.
Maybe someday they'll have a range of phones and smartphone will be an option? Are you a Newton fan by any chance? :P
And my current "smartphone" is a Palm T|C and a Moto SLVR.
Thanks

I'm on day 4 with my new ultimate 11" and I'm loving this thing. The 26:9 is weird at first but the size, like everyone is saying is great.
Wow how did you get such an ultra-uber widescreen? :D

Yeah, I had an idea of it in my head, but you cleared it up, thanks. I guess I got confused at the part where I said that UMTS is TDMA based when really it's actually just intended for GSM networks, correct? And yeah, it bothers me, too, that IS-95 is not used more often.
CDMA is owned by Qualcomm so everytime someone makes a cdma compliant handset qualcomm gets a portion of the profit. WCDM/UMTS is not owned by Qualcomm so more profits for the handset makers. Profit usually wins out over quality.

Some parts of Microsoft's products are proprietary so cannot be used by anyone else. Also people working for companies that have a majority of Microsoft based systems in use (i.e. nearly all of them) find it easier to interact with everyone else if they are using the same software. I for one am happy with Office 2011 - it enables me to work for most of my clients without having to use my Windows 7 bootcamp.

Long time PPC user here on a budget looking to retire my G4 and buy a G5 on ebay. I am noticing a bit of a slow down on my trusty powermac G4.
Specs...
PowerMac G4 867 single
1.25gb ram
10.4.11/classic
2 fx cards for two old monitors
I was planning on running this thing until it died but it just won't die ;). I do notice a bit of a slow down while on the web and playing online java and flash games, iTunes taking longer to load and do anything. :apple: no longer supporting Tiger is getting to me. Plus the boot drive has only 10GB free so I can't really use iMovie anymore. I did everything I know to keep it up to speed; permissions, check to see if I'm paging (I rarely do), run scripts, and even opened it and cleaned out all the dust and cat hair. While I wouldn't call it a dog, I do think it's age is showing. I just ran geekbench and got a 502.
So I guess it's time to retire old faithful and jump on a G5. As never using one though I just had a few questions...
1. Reliability - Been reading a few threads on here and while mostly positive I have seen some peeps say that the G5s are not near as reliable as the G4s. Overheating, power supply failures, and other things I just wanted to check before I head to ebay. Fan cooled vs liquid cooled, does it matter? Are there any PowerMac G5s models I should avoid?
2. Fan noise - How loud are they compared to the mid-G4 powermacs? I am fine with the G4 noise and could even take something a little louder but I am in a usually quiet room though. Didn't want anything too loud.
3. PowerMac vs iMac - While I am leaning towards the PowerMac as I already have two monitors, and the towers have more power, how do the iMacs hold up? Are they dogs compared to dual processor powermacs? I wouldn't mind going to a 20incher ( using 2 17" right now).
I was planning on erasing the G4 and slapping Tiger on the new G5 and bringing over classic for some apps I have still yet to upgrade (Quark 4, Freehand 9). Then one day down the road get Leopard and CS 1 or 2 and run the G5 for 2 or 3 years until it is dead or outdated.
Also I wouldn't mind bringing along my two old 40gb IDE drives, but I read I would need an adapter. What kind would I need and how much do they go for? And could I bring over either of my old FX cards? One is the original PCI ATI 32mb card and the other is a AGP Geforce 4 mx 32mb card.
I been watching ebay and found an average price of $200 - $230 + shipping for the following minimum specs...
PowerMac G5 1.8 x2
2gb ram
80gb HD
FX card with a ADC port (main current monitor uses ADC)
Seller with a lot of positive feedback, usually a store, plus 30 day or more warranty
Seems good to me. Does that price seem about right?
Sorry for long post, but any advice is welcome

It's obvious you're extremely frugal. Why not buy a new mac mini for a few hundred more?

Probably mentioned before:
iLife '07 will have CoreAnimation at a center of it's core [probably] and that is obviously in Leopard only. iLife '07 will be released when Leopard gets released.
Yay, more whining till Leopard.

And this is why we don't take Daring Fireball as fact people, even though I could have told you this 2 months ago.
Daring Fireball stated the iPad 3 in 2011 was PURE SPECULATION not based on any kind of rumor or inside info. I guess everyone forgot to read that part of the post.
And, yeah, duh. With what's going on in Japan right now, we will be VERY fortunate to see an iPad Retina display in 2012.
